Oscar Elizondo is Ahly’s players’ analyst, a new job that is introduced to Egyptian football for the very first time. We met Oscar and had that interview.
- Mr. Oscar, firstly you resemble the Egyptians very much.
I think I resemble Saudis more! Anyway many Latin Americans look like Egyptians both in shape and traditions.
- Tell us about your job as it’s totally new to Egyptian football.
I work as a players’ analyst and scout. My work is total analysis for the players’ performance technically and physically and doing a report on that. Also scouting and reporting opponent teams to the manager. But in Ahly we’ve added a new mission which is doing individual reports for the players and presenting that to the technical staff. Even the fitness trainings are filmed and reported and we inform the players about every stuff.
- And how did the players receive that new job?
At the start they considered me a spy! They kept looking at me during the sessions, but after that they fully understood and we became friends.
- And what do you think of them technically and personally?
Technically they are professionals, and know well what to do. And personally they are amazing. They are modest, and love each other.
- Do you follow the young players?
Yes, I go with Pedro to Nasr City and watch the youngsters, and we suggest some of them to join us in the first team to watch them more closely. Generally Ahly has got many talented young players who will have a bright future.
- What do you think of Ahly fans?
They are great. Egyptians in general are very friendly and I love the way they treat us. And Ahly supporters do amazing things. I keep on filming what they do and show that to the players as to motivate them before matches.
- And what about their relationship with Manuel Jose?
I can’t believe that. When we were in Jeddah Jose went on a vacation to Cairo with Pedro and the Brazilian goalkeepers’ coach Mario. Mario told me that what he saw was unbelievable and that even in Argentina and Brazil who are the heart of football, fans don’t treat their manager that way.
- Did you play football professionally?
Yes I played in Argentina for Velez Sarsfield, but in the B team.
- And what team do you support?
Independiente. I like watching Barcelona as they have the world’s best Messi, and also I worked with their manager Guardiola in Barcelona B.
- And as you’re Argentine, who do you think the best, Messi or Maradona?
Messi is the best nowadays, but Maradona is Maradona. And when Messi wins the World Cup for Argentina we’ll see!
- Finally what’s your message to Ahly supporters?
I tell them; with you we start every game leading 1-0. What you do for us is amazing and please don’t stop that.
